Good Deed or Oprah-entitlement

Oprah Gets Two New Dogs for Her Birthday!

Oprah celebrated her 56th birthday on Jan. 29 with two new family members, 14-week-old springer spaniel siblings Sunny and Lauren!

Last year she got 2 cocker spaniels puppies, although one died from pravo. All the dogs came from the PAWS Chicago -- a no kill shelter. Hurray!!! Right?

She asked the shelter to find Springer Spaniel puppies and guess what? They came through.

Oprah said. "They could have been euthanized if they weren't adopted. Can you believe that? And now they're gonna go home with me."

OK, first of all as a dog lover and one that has been to many shelters, adoption fairs and pounds, these puppies would never have been put down. They would be adopted so quickly. So what point is she making. YES, call PAWS - they are a great organization but don't call looking for puppies, least of all purebred puppies. I looked at the Paws Chicago site and there wasn't a dog under 2 years old and most were mixed breeds.

If Oprah really wanted to change things, they would have brought out two middle aged mix breed dogs that people don't look twice at and turn out to be the best dogs in the end (that's for you my old girl Bailey)

  2. You are sooo right. The chances of getting a purebred puppy at a shelter is almost nil, unless, of course, you are Oprah. Shelter and rescue dogs are the best, and especially the mixed breeds. They seem to know that they have been saved and become wonderful pets and beloved members of the family. Go Zoe!

  3. Good point! So.......is this all about Oprah's and PAW Chicago's publicity - to make Oprah look better and PAWS Chicago well known? As mentioned, since Oprah has such a powerful publicity, it was just disappointing to know that she did not adopt underbred dogs to encourage people to do the same. Oh, well, in the end, Oprah is just one of those celebrities....
Do you think having springer spaniel will come into fashion this year?

  4. lance - i couldn't agree with you more. i do believe that oprah does have every intention of doing good overall, but somewhere along the way, she went from being everyone's favorite tv girlfriend to poprah! (the pope may have gotten people to not eat meat on fridays, but oprah got people to READ! CRAZY!) and chiz - i think not only will springer spaniels become "in" - watch for the names sunny and lauren rise in popularity...not just for dogs but for kids too. that's the power of the O!

  5. First, this seems like a "win-win" situation to me. OW gets the puppies she prefers (and she, like every other person in America has a right to have preferences). PAWS gets publicity that might lead to other puppies and dogs being adopted. The puppies get a good home.

Second, maybe she really thinks that they would have been put down. I did not know that PAWS was no kill, nor did I know that you could not get pure-bred puppies there. I am not an expert on shelters and adoptions and I bet she isn't either.

  6. Rod in NYC....you make a valid point. If one person goes to the PAWS shelter and gives a dog a home it's worth it. I just feel it's a little misleading that you can get a purebred puppy from PAWS when in reality she told the PAWS founder what she wanted and they went out and found those puppies at a city pound for her. So yes, they could have been put down but unlikely. The every day person can not goto PAWS and tell them what kind of puppy they want. And I'm sure many people were disappointed when they went to the shelter and didn't find perfect Springer Spaniel or Cocker Spaniel puppies. I think it would have been more admiral for her to rescue an older mixed breed dog (I could see her followers running out and adopting older dogs that wouldn't normally be adopted). I guess I should be happy with the PAWS plug because she use to go to breeders for her perfect dogs --- now she just put the PAWS staff to work finding them for her.

  7. I agree completely! Oprah can suck it. 1st she interviewed Palin & did not ask her one tough question or call her out on anything & now this.
